Harvenia

Harvenia, capital city of the Kingdom of Hyralia, did not have very impressive walls.

Sure, the walls around the palace were impressive, from what I could see. So were the walls around the inner part of the city, where the nobles kept their mansions. But the walls around the city itself were sad wooden things that stood at about ten feet. From what Fostus told me, the inner walls had originally been the walls of the city itself. But the thing about cities is that they tend to grow, so these wooden walls were just the latest in a series of temporary barriers that had been built around the ever-expanding capital.

While there was a small force of soldiers that met us when we arrived, they were quickly overwhelmed by the combined armies of the former Welbrig territory and Fostus’ men. The enemy retreated deep into the city to man the inner wall.

And that left us to conduct what may have been the dumbest siege in the history of warfare.

“They really just… left all these people outside?” I asked, looking around the street. I was riding a horse, alongside Branwyn, Radu, and Fostus. We were leading the rebel army into the now defenseless commoner section of Harvenia. A number of civilians were watching us from their doorways and windows.

“Apparently, they weren’t important,” Radu said. He nodded up toward the roof of one building, where a pair of foxfolk children were watching us.

“I’m surprised there are foxfolk so close to humans here,” said Branwyn.

“Makes sense,” I said with a shrug. “Cities tend to be a bit more diverse than more rural areas, just by virtue of having more people in less space. You get neighborhoods divided up by ethnic group, but there’s a lot of bleedover just because of how cramped it is. Even if the groups don’t like each other, they usually have to learn to play nicely enough to keep everything running smoothly.”

Fostus touched his hand to his chin. “Fascinating. I confess, I never really noticed Harvenia’s foxfolk population before, nor I have given it as much thought as you seem to have, Gids.”

I tried and failed to suppress a grin. “I was more speaking in general,” I told him. “But every city’s got a few sections of rich people who’ve paid well to live away from anyone they disapprove of. That sound more familiar, Fostus?”

His face reddened. Fflur, who was riding behind us, shot me a glare.

“That, erm, does sound more familiar,” Fostus admitted, looking around the city with renewed interest.

The rest of the ScaleGuard were not with us. They’d taken a smaller force to loop around the city and make it to the Hyralian River, where Kono and her Thieves would steal a few ships for the force to set up a blockade. Riverjaw had gone with them, and I could faintly sense his presence on the other side of Harvenia. If I had to guess, I’d say they’d reached the river by now.

Which meant it was time for us to do our part.
